ROC Friese Poort
Vocational and Professional Training and Education
The Friese Poort Regional Training Center – known in Dutch as ROC Friese Poort – employs over 1300 people and provides professional training and education to some 12,000 students (both young people and adults). The students receive their training at schools in the towns of Leeuwarden, Dokkum, Drachten, Sneek (located in the northern province of Friesland) and Emmeloord (province of Flevoland). ROC Friese Poort, which has a Protestant background, strives to be a welcoming meeting place for people from all cultures and walks of life.
Mission
ROC Friese Poort is a training center giving people an opportunity to learn, enjoy themselves, as well as exchange knowledge and experiences. The students receive personal attention in small-scale settings in schools with strong regional links. The center prepares youngsters and adults for the job market and society. The training is geared to the existing educational level of the students, their ambitions and talents. Drawing on its Protestant background, ROC Friese Poort provides a well-rounded education.
The key words at ROC Friese Poort are personal, ambitious and Protestant. Here students take center stage. The emphasis is on instilling character and integrity, as well preparing them for a lifelong career and full participation in society.
Personal
ROC Friese Poort is an open and transparent organization accessible to all people regardless of their religion, political convictions, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or nationality. The center shows tolerance and respect for the individual identity of the participants. Everyone can count on receiving fair treatment. ROC Friese Poort seeks to create a safe and welcoming learning environment in which people have respect for each other and a strong sense of responsibility. For that purpose, the center has drawn up a code of conduct, which applies to both students and staff.
The educational concept adopted by ROC Friese Poort is student-activating learning. In essence, this means that students are actively involved in what they are learning, take responsibility, show initiative and are very much oriented toward the real-life working situation. Using this as a basis, the center provides training that is tailored to the students future jobs, as well as their individual talents and character traits. ROC Friese Poort gives considerable personal support and advice to students as they go through their education, the result being that a high percentage of students successfully complete the training program.
Ambitious
Educational developments place increasingly heavier demands on the facilities in school buildings. In recent years, ROC Friese Poort has shown a strong determination to continue investing in the future. Examples of its future-oriented policy are ambitious new-construction and renovation projects in Drachten, Dokkum, Emmeloord, Leeuwarden and Sneek. In building new accommodation and modernizing existing facilities, ROC Friese Poort seeks to create a meeting place in every sense of the word. The number of classrooms for theoretical instruction is limited. Most of them have now been replaced by up-to-date areas for practical instruction, where students can develop the skills required for their future professions. In these so-called open learning centers, they work on practical matters and thus improve their hands-on capabilities, as well as expand their knowledge and comprehension.

Globalization
ROC Friese Poort aims to prepare students for a career that also offers international perspectives in an increasingly globalized world. Among other things, students can follow the International Vocational Training Course known as BPV. BPV graduates receive a Europass – an official EU document introduced to make it easier for this group to find employment across the European Continent. On top of that, ROC Friese Poort organizes exchange projects with foreign training centers and develops teaching methods (such as Rainbow) in conjunction with foreign partners. For mutual benefit, ROC Friese Poort maintains contacts with organizations and individuals in the EU and the rest of the world.
Working with Limitations
Not everyone can simply follow a training course. People with physical, mental or psychosocial impediments have to resolve many practical problems – such as public transport, wheelchair access, as well as suitable learning tools and aids – before they can take part in a program. ROC Friese Poort endeavors to find suitable solutions to these problems, so that all participants have every chance of successfully completing the vocational course of their choice. These candidates often surprise themselves and the people around them by their achievements!
Special Training Programs
Special training programs are available to students for whom the regular training courses are too demanding (some of them find this out half-way through the course). These special training programs allow them to obtain vocational qualifications. Examples are the Passport Program and the Bonifacius Project.
The Passport Program (assistant qualified for the labor market) is aimed at those who, for various reasons, cannot follow a regular Level 1 training course. The training provided is tailored to the individual needs and qualities of the participants and is compiled in consultation with them. So the training on offer varies widely. Participants who have completed a program can then take part in a follow-up Level 2 training course or enter the job market.
The Bonifacius Project focuses on at-risk youngsters and other difficult-to-employ groups and seeks to provide with them educational and job opportunities. These tailor-made projects are preceded by an introductory program. Among other points, the participants learn to control anger and aggression, which, of course, are unacceptable to potential employers.
